Overview

The Center for the Study of Child Care Employment (CSCCE), at the Institute for Research on Labor and Employment (IRLE) focuses on achieving comprehensive public investments which enable and reward the early childhood workforce to deliver high-quality care and education for all children. To achieve this goal, CSCCE conducts cutting-edge research and proposes policy solutions aimed at improving how our nation prepares, supports, and rewards the early care and education workforce to ensure young children’s optimal development. As a result of this work, policymakers and their staff, thought leaders in the field, and other stakeholders use CSCCE’s research and recommendations to inform policy decisions that support the early care and education workforce.

IRLE is an “Organized Research Unit” of the University of California at Berkeley. IRLE brings together faculty from several academic departments and supports multidisciplinary research about labor and employment relations. IRLE sponsors many research centers, including the California Public Employee Relations, Center for Labor Research and Education, the Center on Wage and Employment Dynamics, and the Center for the Study of Child Care Employment (CSCCE). It publishes the widely respected academic journal, Industrial Relations: A Journal of Economy and Society, and houses an important research library that collects and preserves a wide array of information about work, organizations and labor issues.

Responsibilities

The Research Associate will contribute to the research for the 2019 California Early Care and Education Workforce Study for the Center for the Study of Child Care Employment (CSCCE). The Workforce Study will be implemented with a statewide and regionally representative sample of the early educator workforce in California. The research design will ensure comparability to CSCCE’s 2006 Workforce Study while also addressing new areas of early care and education research and policy and may include subsamples of certain populations. Activities for this position will include participating in the development of the study research design and sampling plan, assisting CSCCE research staff in overseeing survey piloting and administration, developing an application to the Committee for the Protection of Human Subjects, conducting background research on study communities, conducting data analysis, and contributing to report preparation.

  • Supports CSCCE senior research staff in developing sample plan and research design to ensure study goals are met efficiently; may propose alternate strategies and design modifications.
  • Supports work of CSCCE senior research staff to oversee the development and piloting of survey instrument and implementation of the survey, including monitoring response rates for state, regional, county, and sub-study data, and implementing procedures to increase response rate
  • Contributes to monitoring of study progress, including coordinating the tracking of county­-level data
  • Gathers and synthesizes background research on study communities
  • Develops an application to the Committee for the Protection of Human Subjects
  • Conducts data cleaning and analysis, including any analysis necessary to prepare the study sample
  • Contributes to report preparation, including county-level reports and study briefs.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training
  • Working knowledge and experience with survey data collection activities.
  • Working knowledge of the design and implementation of survey data collection procedures and protocols.
  • Strong quantitative data analysis skills
  • Knowledge of statistical software, such as SPSS or STATA
  • Solid communication skills
  • Solid organizational skills
  • Experience writing reports of research findings
