Research Technician in Self-Regulation at the Pennsylvania State University

The Dynamics of Self-Regulation Project at The Pennsylvania State University, headed by Drs. Pamela Cole and Nilam Ram, has an opening for a full-time research technician to assist in Phase II of a federally funded study of young children.  The position will start immediately.

The skills acquired through this position will be particularly useful for individuals who are interested in attending graduate school in child psychology or human development.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on a study funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, investigating the development of self-regulation as a dynamic process that changes across the first 5 years of life.  The person filling the position will interact with young children and their parents as part of the data collection.  Data collection includes observational, questionnaire, and autonomic nervous system measurement with children ages 30 through 60 months and their parents.  The position also includes assisting in data reduction (scoring and coding) and preliminary data analysis.  The research technician serves as a member of a collaborative team of faculty members from Psychology (Clinical and Developmental) and Human Development and Family Studies, post-doctoral fellows, graduate students from those programs, and the Project Coordinator who assists in supervising research technicians and undergraduate volunteer research assistants. This project is a collaboration and bridge between the Child Study Center (http://csc.psych.psu.edu) and the Quantitative Developmental Systems Methodology group (http://quantdev.ssri.psu.edu).

Skills
Typically requires an Associate’s degree or higher plus one year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  A bachelor’s degree in Psychology or Human Development or a related field and experience with child development research preferred. The successful candidate will also have skills in relating to very young children and their parents, basic computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, basic statistical skills, using programs like SPSS and R), and high motivation to learn additional skills related to data collection, processing, and analysis.
