Summer Treatment Program Counselor at Cincinnati Children’s Medical Hospital

Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center is looking to recruit undergraduate and graduate counselors for the 2018 ADHD Summer Treatment Program (STP).  The STP is an evidence-based, therapeutic program devoted exclusively to 8-12 year old children with ADHD who are placed in groups of 10-12 children and supervised by 5-6 counselors.

 

Counselors in the STP receive extensive clinical training and intervention skills in helping children with behavioral, social, and academic difficulties.  Experience gained during the STP is often highly sought-after in graduate training programs including clinical psychology, social work, and education!

 

Lead Counselors: These staff members are typically graduate-level students from clinical psychology, school psychology, social work, or related programs or individuals. As well as implementing the program, they supervise 4-5 undergraduate counselors for in implementing the treatment program. During staff training, they assist program staff members in training undergraduate counselors in the token economy/point system, time out procedures, social skills and problem solving training procedures and review the clinical records of the children with whom they will be working during the STP.

 

Primary Counselors: These staff members are typically undergraduate students majoring in psychology, social work, education, or related fields. Counselors implement the treatment program with their group of 10-15 children as well as serve as a primary counselor for 1-3 children within their group. Counselors implement the behavior modification interventions during activities and also conduct sports skills training, social skills training, and problem solving training. During classroom sessions, counselors plan activities, design and revise individualized programs and targets for children’s daily report cards, and meet individually or as a group for supervision.

 

Counselors complete 2 weeks of training with psychologists specializing in ADHD before the start of the program and receive weekly supervision. Training will begin on May 24thThe summer program runs from June 11th and through July 27th, 2018. The final week of employment (July 30th through August 2nd) includes report-writing.  Counselors work Monday through Wednesday, typically from 7:45 am to 5:30 pm, Thursdays from 7:45am to 6:30pm, and Fridays from 7:45am to 3:45pm. All counselors are paid an hourly wage with overtime benefits.
